Nachdem es mit ZugInfo und Fahrplan bereits seit geraumer Zeit zwei Apps fürs iPhone gibt, welche die Navigation im öffentlichen Personenverkehr erleichtern, hat man nun auch bei der Deutschen Bahn AG die Zeichen der Zeit erkannt und bietet ab sofort den DB Navigator im App Store an.

Das Programm macht auf den ersten Blick einen positiven Eindruck, obgleich der Mehrwert im Vergleich zu den oben erwähnten Apps eher bescheiden ausfällt. Wer beispielsweise eine integrierte Ticketbuchung/-verwaltung erwartet, wird enttäuscht. Es gibt lediglich eine Umleitung auf die mobile Bahn-Website, wo nach erneuter Suche, nochmaliger Auswahl der gewünschten Verbindung und der Anmeldung mit den Zugangsdaten (voherige Registrierung vorausgesetzt) ein Handy-Ticket (MMS) erworben werden kann.

Ist dies nun das Ende von Fahrplan? Es bleibt jedenfalls spannend!

Some history first. When I started this business in October 2002, 1.00 USD was worth 1.02 EUR. Since then the exchange rate has changed radically. The US dollar has lost nearly 40% of its value and these days you get only 0.63 EUR for a buck. Why does it matter? As you may know, I live in Germany. I have to pay my bills in Euro after all and life did not become less expensive over the years unfortunately. To make a long story short, a price adjustment is overdue. I am switching to Euro as the base currency for all sales with immediate effect*. The price for a single user licence of ASM is set to 12.49 EUR. This corresponds approximately to 19.67 USD at present, it will fluctuate as the exchange rate changes.

From a European point of view it means that as of now ASM costs about 2.80 EUR less compared to 2002. However, in the United States, or countries that have their local currency pegged to the US dollar, it will be perceived as a price increase. So, depending where you live, the price change is either good or bad news.
